The Sales Job Market in Texas
Entry sales jobs mean talking with customers in a store, on the phone or by chat, answering questions and helping them buy. Employers usually train you on their products and systems. Being friendly and reliable matters more than experience.
What you need in Texas
No state license is needed for retail sales or customer service. Some jobs, like insurance sales, need a license; the posting will say so.
What sales pays in Texas
Texas minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and Texas cities can't set a higher one. Some sales jobs add commission or bonuses on top of hourly pay. Check how pay works in each posting before you apply.
BLS figures are area averages for the whole occupation group, including experienced workers. They are not employer-confirmed. A pay rate stated in a job posting always wins.
City highlights
- San Antonio: Customer service is a big employer here. San Antonio had about 34,730 customer service representatives, at 1.85 times the national rate, earning an average of $20.64 an hour (BLS, May 2025).
- Dallas–Fort Worth: Office and administrative support, which includes customer service, is the largest job group in DFW at 12.1% of jobs, averaging $24.60 an hour (BLS, May 2025).
- Houston: Office and administrative support is also Houston's largest job group at 11.5% of jobs, averaging $23.66 an hour (BLS, May 2025).
Tips
- Practice a short answer to "Tell me about yourself." Sales interviews test how you talk.
- Ask how commission works and when it starts.
- Call center jobs often hire in groups. Ask when the next training class starts.
