The Retail Job Market in Texas
Retail jobs cover the register, stocking shelves, helping customers and keeping the floor clean. Most training happens on your first shifts. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the typical entry-level education for retail sales workers as no formal credential, with no related experience required.
What you need in Texas
No state license is needed for general retail. Grocery and deli roles that handle unwrapped food require a Texas food handler course within 60 days of being hired. Stores that sell alcohol often ask cashiers to get a TABC seller-server certificate.
What retail pays in Texas
Texas minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, the same as the federal rate. Texas cities can't set a higher minimum, so $7.25 is the floor in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio alike. Many retail employers post pay above that; check the pay on each listing.
City highlights
- Houston: Sales and related jobs make up about 8 in every 100 jobs in the Houston metro (BLS, May 2025).
- Dallas–Fort Worth: Sales and related workers in DFW earned an average of $26.74 an hour, above the national average of $26.43 (BLS, May 2025). That group includes higher-paid sales reps, so entry retail pay is usually lower.
- San Antonio: Sales and related jobs make up about 8 in every 100 jobs in the San Antonio metro (BLS, May 2025).
Tips
- Apply before the holidays. Retail staffs up every fall.
- Be specific about your availability. Weekend and evening shifts are easiest to land.
- Look for "no experience required" or "will train" in the posting.
