The Healthcare Job Market in Texas
Not every healthcare job needs a medical license. Non-clinical staff keep hospitals and clinics running: checking patients in, scheduling, serving meals, cleaning rooms and moving patients between departments. Employers train you on their systems.
What you need in Texas
No license is needed for non-clinical roles. Jobs like nursing assistant, medical assistant or phlebotomist usually need a certification first; NoProbJobs leaves those out. Expect a background check and sometimes health screenings for hospital jobs.
What healthcare support jobs pay in Texas
Texas minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and Texas cities can't set a higher one. Hospital and clinic support jobs often pay above minimum and may include benefits. Check the pay on each listing.
BLS figures are area averages for the whole occupation group, including experienced workers. They are not employer-confirmed. A pay rate stated in a job posting always wins.
City highlights
- San Antonio: Healthcare support makes up 5.1% of San Antonio jobs, the highest share of the three metros (BLS, May 2025). The metro also has about 7,350 medical secretaries and administrative assistants, averaging $20.91 an hour.
- Houston: Healthcare support makes up 3.9% of Houston jobs (BLS, May 2025).
- Dallas–Fort Worth: Healthcare support makes up 3.2% of DFW jobs (BLS, May 2025).
Tips
- Front desk and scheduling jobs value customer service experience of any kind.
- Ask what shifts the department covers. Hospitals run 24/7.
- Read the requirements section to make sure no certification is required.
